Welcome to our site about our son Brodie Dick who will join our family on August 8, 2011 at 8:00. At 22 weeks we went in to find out if we were having a boy or a girl and we found out that we were having a boy but that he may have a birth defect. After an agonizing week we found out that our son had CDH (Congenital Diaphragmatic Hernia). CDH occurs when the diaphragm fails to fully form, allowing the abdominal organs into the chest cavity and preventing lung growth. CDH occurs in 1 of every 2500 births and a baby with CDH is born every 10 minutes. 50% of babies diagnosed with CDH do not survive. The cause is not known. This will be a journal of our journey and will allow our family and friends to keep up to date on what is happening with us and our son Brodie. Thanks for your prayers and support!

Friday July 29 Appt

We finally had a quick appt today.  We were in and out in a little over 30 minutes and only had one appt.  Brodie was moving well and he did all of tthe tricks that they want him to do.  We are down to the end and only have Tuesday and Friday appts. left.  Looking forward to a great weekend with the family before the craziness begins.

July 26 Appt

Today we had good appts.  Brodie is growing and moving well.  I think LaVona has finally reached the point where she has had enough and is ready for Brodie to be here.  She is just tired and we are both ready to be done with all of the appts. Our next appt is on Friday.  It is never good when the staff of a doctor's office knows you by name.  With that said we would like to thank all of the doctors and nurses for the quick appts and many laughs.  Hope everyone is doing well.

July 22 Appt

I guess things went as expected today at our appointment.  The ultrasound was noneventful which is always good and we met with the cardiologist.  Although both the right and left ventricles have decreased in size they were not too alarmed.  The doctor said that it should be expected since there is so much up in the chest cavity.  I am attaching a drawing that they showed us so that you can get an idea of what a normal chest looks like and what Brodie's looks like.  Now we just have our regular Tuesday and Friday doctor visits.  Hope everyone has a great weekend!

Tuesday Appointment

We had great appointments on Tuesday.  Brodie was moving great and we got some great pictures.  It was somewhat of a sad day because we had our last appointment with the Brazilian doctor that is doing the CDH study.  We have had many laughs and have been blessed to have met such a great man.  He shared with us that at the age of 19 that he felt that CDH was what he was put here to do.  How we got out of there without LaVona giving him a hug I will never know.  Tomorrow 7/22 we have an ultrasound and our last echocardiogram.  We just pray that everything has stayed the same.  This is are last big appointment until he is born.  We will update you tomorrow.
